Add up weekly hours from clock-in and clock-out times, with breaks, rounding and pay
A time card calculator adds up the hours you worked from your clock-in and clock-out times. Enter each day's start, end and unpaid break, and it gives total hours as hours:minutes and as decimal hours, which is what most payroll systems want. Add an hourly rate to see gross pay, and pick an overtime rule to split regular and overtime hours.
Daily hours = (clock out - clock in) - unpaid break. Weekly hours = sum of daily hours.
| Calculation | Expression | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Standard day, 1 hour lunch | 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 60 min break | 8:00 (8.00 h) |
| Shorter lunch | 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, 30 min break | 8:00 (8.00 h) |
| Night shift | 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, 30 min break | 7:30 (7.50 h) |
| Odd shift | 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM, 45 min break | 8:00 (8.00 h) |
Subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then subtract any unpaid break. 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 60-minute lunch is 8 hours. Add the days together for the week.
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the hours: 45 / 60 = 0.75, so 7:45 is 7.75 hours.
It is a rounding method to the nearest quarter hour. Under U.S. Department of Labor rules (29 CFR 785.48), rounding is allowed if it averages out so employees are paid for all time worked. Minutes 1 to 7 round down and 8 to 14 round up. Choose 'Nearest 15 min' to see it.
