Split hours into regular, overtime and double time and see gross pay
The federal Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime pay of at least 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek for covered, non-exempt employees. Some states add daily overtime. This calculator splits one week of daily hours into regular, overtime and double-time hours under the rule you pick and shows gross pay.
Overtime pay = regular rate x 1.5 x overtime hours. Total pay = hours x rate + overtime premium.
| Calculation | Expression | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Federal, 5 x 10 h at $20 | 50 h | 40 h regular + 10 h OT = $1,100.00 |
| California, 3 x 12 h at $20 | 36 h | 24 h regular + 12 h OT = $840.00 |
Multiply your regular hourly rate by 1.5 and by the hours over the limit. At $20 an hour, 10 overtime hours earn 10 x $30 = $300 for those hours.
Non-exempt employees must get at least 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek (FLSA, U.S. Department of Labor Fact Sheet #23).
California, Alaska and Nevada (for lower-paid workers) apply daily overtime, and Colorado applies overtime over 12 hours in a day. Rules change, so confirm with your state labor department.
Usually not. Only hours actually worked count toward the 40-hour limit under federal law.
