Calculate mulch, soil, and landscaping materials
A mulch and soil calculator estimates cubic yards or bags needed for landscaping projects. Proper depth ensures plants thrive while suppressing weeds.
Cubic Yards = (Length × Width × Depth) / 27
2-3 inches: Standard for most gardens and beds. 4 inches: For weed control in pathways. Never exceed 4 inches - too deep mulch can suffocate roots and promote disease.
Bulk (cubic yards): Cheaper for large areas (100+ sq ft). Delivered and dumped. Requires wheelbarrow. Bags: More expensive per yard but convenient for small projects, no delivery needed.
2 cubic foot bags: 13.5 bags = 1 cubic yard. 3 cubic foot bags: 9 bags = 1 cubic yard. Bulk is usually half the cost of bagged for large projects.
Hardwood: Decomposes slowly, adds nutrients. Cedar/cypress: Pest-resistant, aromatic. Pine bark: Acidic, good for acid-loving plants. Rubber: Permanent but doesn't add nutrients. Colored: Purely decorative, may contain dyes.
New lawn: 4-6" of topsoil. Raised beds: 12-18" deep. Amending existing soil: 2-3" worked into top 6". 1 cubic yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3" depth.
Spring: After soil warms, to retain moisture. Fall: Before winter, to insulate roots. Refresh annually as mulch decomposes. Wait until plants are established before applying around new plantings.
