Calculate tips and split bills between people
Tipping is a customary practice in many countries where customers add an extra amount to their bill to reward service staff. Tip percentages and customs vary widely by country, type of service, and quality of service received. This calculator helps you quickly determine tip amounts and split bills among groups.
Tip Amount = Bill Total × (Tip Percentage / 100)
| Calculation | Expression | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 15% tip on $50 | $50 × 15% | $7.50 tip |
| 20% tip on $80 | $80 × 20% | $16.00 tip |
| Split between 4 | $100 + 18% ÷ 4 | $29.50/person |
In the US, 15-20% is standard for restaurants: 15% for adequate service, 18% for good service, and 20%+ for excellent service. Other services vary: 15-20% for hair stylists, $1-2 per drink at bars, 15-20% for taxi drivers, and $2-5 per night for hotel housekeeping.
Traditionally, tips should be calculated on the pre-tax bill amount. However, calculating on the total (including tax) is becoming common for convenience and results in only slightly more tip. Either approach is acceptable.
Calculate each person's share based on what they ordered, then add their proportional tip. Alternatively, split the total (bill + tip) equally for simplicity. Many prefer equal splits unless there's a significant difference in order values.
A tip is voluntary and given directly to staff. A service charge is mandatory, added by the establishment, and may or may not go entirely to staff. Check if service is included before adding a tip. In many countries, service charges are standard.
Tipping for takeout is optional but appreciated. 10% is generous for simple orders. For large, complex orders or curbside pickup with extra service, 15-20% may be appropriate. During difficult times, tipping takeout helps support restaurant workers.
Tipping varies widely: US expects 15-20%, Canada similar but slightly lower, UK/Europe typically 10% or rounding up, Australia/New Zealand tipping is uncommon, Japan/China can be seen as insulting. Research local customs when traveling.
