Convert between kg, pounds, ounces, and more
Weight conversion allows you to switch between different units of mass measurement. The metric system (kilograms, grams) is the international standard, while pounds and ounces are used in the US and UK for everyday purposes. Accurate conversion is crucial for cooking, shipping, fitness, and international trade.
1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds = 35.274 ounces
| Calculation | Expression | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Kg to pounds | 1 kg | 2.205 lb |
| Pounds to kg | 150 lb | 68.04 kg |
| Ounces to grams | 16 oz | 453.59 g |
| Stones to kg | 10 st | 63.5 kg |
Mass is the amount of matter in an object (constant everywhere). Weight is the gravitational force on that mass (varies by location). On Earth's surface, they're proportional. Kilograms technically measure mass; pounds can mean either, but usually weight in everyday use.
Multiply kilograms by 2.20462 to get pounds. Divide pounds by 2.20462 (or multiply by 0.4536) to get kilograms. Quick estimate: kg × 2 ≈ pounds (slightly underestimates). Example: 70 kg × 2.205 = 154.35 lbs.
A stone equals 14 pounds (6.35 kg) and is used in the UK and Ireland for body weight. To convert: multiply stones by 14 for pounds, or by 6.35 for kg. Example: 11 stone 4 pounds = 158 pounds = 71.7 kg.
Avoirdupois ounces (regular) are 28.35 grams. Troy ounces are 31.1 grams and used for precious metals. A troy pound has 12 troy ounces (373.2g), while an avoirdupois pound has 16 ounces (453.6g). Gold and silver prices are always quoted in troy ounces.
Multiply grams by 0.0353 (or divide by 28.35) for ounces. Example: 250g butter = 8.8 oz. For dry ingredients, weight is more accurate than volume. Common conversions: 1 cup flour ≈ 120-125g, 1 cup sugar ≈ 200g.
Metric ton (tonne) = 1000 kg = 2204.6 lbs. Short ton (US) = 2000 lbs = 907.2 kg. Long ton (UK) = 2240 lbs = 1016 kg. Metric tons are used internationally; US uses short tons; UK traditionally used long tons but now mainly uses metric.
