Roof Pitch and Slope Factor: Why Roof Area Is Bigger Than the Floor Plan

October 21, 2026

A sloped roof has more surface area than the floor plan beneath it. The slope factor, √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12 for a pitch of rise per 12 inches of run, converts footprint area to actual roof area. For a 6/12 pitch it is √(36 + 144) ÷ 12 = 1.118, so a 1,000 square foot footprint has about 1,118 square feet of roof, or 11.2 roofing squares.

Slope Factors for Common Pitches

Pitch is expressed as rise over 12 inches of horizontal run. The factor comes from the Pythagorean theorem: the sloped length is the hypotenuse of a triangle with a base of 12 and a height equal to the rise.

From Area to Squares and Bundles

Roofers measure in squares, where 1 square equals 100 square feet. A 1,118 square foot roof is 11.2 squares. Asphalt shingles typically come three bundles to a square, so 11.2 squares needs about 34 bundles before waste.

Add 10% to 15% for waste on a simple gable roof and up to 20% on roofs with hips, valleys, and dormers, which create many angled cuts. Do not forget starter strips, ridge caps, underlayment, and flashing, which are priced and measured separately.

Overhangs and Complex Roofs

The footprint should include the eaves and rakes, not just the walls of the house. An overhang of 12 inches on each side of a 30 by 40 foot house increases the footprint to 32 by 42, from 1,200 to 1,344 square feet, an increase of 12%.

For hip roofs, valleys, and multiple levels, measure each plane separately or use a roofing calculator. A steep roof over about 8/12 also raises labor cost, because workers need extra safety equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate roof area from the footprint?

Multiply the footprint area by the slope factor for the pitch, such as 1.118 for 6/12.

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Typically three bundles for standard architectural shingles, though some products use four.

How much waste should I add for a roof?

About 10% for a simple gable and up to 15% to 20% for complicated roofs.

What is a roofing square?

A unit of 100 square feet of roof area.
